YETC Exploration

The YETC is so full of resources that it may seem a bit overwhelming. However, I am excited to explore it further as I plan lessons and take advantage of the resources that the YETC offers. I am looking forward to showing my husband even tonight some of the neat programs available online such as Phun, Celestia, and cooliris.

In my future classroom, I hope to give my students time to also explore some of these programs. The internet is full of amazing programs to download; although, there is so many inappropriate things on the internet or violent programs that can be played on the computer, too. I hope to show my students the programs that we explored in the YETC lab. I think it is important that we show students these great programs and where to find the programs in order to show students all the positive and fun things they can explore on the computer and internet. Some programs that Nathan showed us are so interactive that I think that students will be engaged and will learn from them. As he told us earlier today, if we feel we are lacking in one area such as music, technology can help us where we lack and the lab is also available to help.

I am glad that we took time to come and learn about what the YETC lab has to offer students and teachers. With all these resources, I hope to create engaging lessons and use technology in my classroom. Thanks to Nathan at the YETC lab for showing us a bunch of resources and programs that he has worked hard to make available to us!

My Lesson Plan and My Adventures with UEN

As I was exploring the UEN website, I found it very useful. Not only could I find all the core curriculum standards, but I was impressed by all the lesson plans that one could find on the website. This will be useful as I look for ideas for future lesson plans. I also enjoy how some of the lesson plans include ideas that one can use to involve the students' families and extension ideas for different lesson plans. Even though I was a little overwhelmed with all the information on UEN, I am becoming more familiar as I take time to explore. In order for this website to become useful, teachers really need to take time to get familiar with, learn where to find things and know what sort of lesson plan ideas are on the website.

I also enjoyed creating my own UEN website. This is a valuable way to keep teachers organized and keep parents informed about what is going on in the classroom. The myuen.org is also easy for teachers to create and add information. However, I wish that you could personalize it more with different information that teachers may want to include such as class projects and such. Although, a teacher may find that a blog for the class is also a great way to be a little more personalized.

For my lesson plan, I have chosen to do it for the second grade under second grade core content, standard 3, objective 1b. The title is "Plant Scientists." Here are the links where I borrowed ideas: http://www.uen.org/Lessonplan/preview.cgi?LPid=14398 and http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/gpe/case2/c2a.html.

9/8/08

I have learned a lot today about blogs. This is my first one. I am excited to learn technology that can be effective in the classroom.

In my future classroom, I think it would be sort of fun to do a blog for the class. However, I wonder what you would do if you have students that do not have access to a computer? Maybe I can give time in class for students to use the computer to add posts to the blog. It would be fun to have maybe a class journal blog where everyone could answer questions like "what makes you mad? what makes you happy?" so the class can get to know eachother and the teacher can get to know his/her students better. I can see this sort of technology being fun and will useful in class. It could also be a fun resource for parents to go onto the blog and see pictures of the class, read what they are doing, and learn more about their child. This is a great technology to take advantage of and use in the classroom.
